The Chicago Cubs announced Thursday that they acquired lefty reliever Caleb Smith from the Brewers for cash considerations.

This move comes as a bit of a surprise for Smith, as he was just recently taken in the Rule 5 Draft by the Brewers.

This move makes sense for the Brewers though, because Smith is not ready for the big leagues just yet. A player taken in the Rule 5 Draft must stay on that team’s 25-man roster for the whole season. By trading him, neither the Brewers or the Cubs will have to do this.

Smith has spent his whole career in the minor leagues. He played this past season for the Double-A Trenton Thunder.(Yankees organization)

Smith will add left-handed bullpen help for the Cubs once he is ready to come up.
